In the bustling world of daycare, staff members often find themselves navigating a landscape laden with challenges and stress. Mirjam Johannesen, the director of Sólareygað daycare in the Municipality of Torshavn, highlights one critical factor: noise.
“We operate in a vibrant environment from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and the noise levels reflect that. It’s a natural part of childhood, and it’s how it should be,” she explains. However, Johannesen notes that the Municipality of Torshavn is actively seeking solutions to mitigate this issue. “We’re encouraging more institutions to implement sound-dampening measures. There is a growing trend, but not all centers have adopted these changes yet. The situation remains far from ideal, not just in Torshavn, but across the Faroe Islands. Ultimately, it’s about making a commitment.”
Tummas Pauli Juul, head of department at the Labor and Fire Inspectorate, underscores the importance of having a safety group in the workplace to address issues like these. “When we think about workplace safety, it involves not only the employer and management but also supervisors, safety officers, and employees. If these concerns aren’t discussed in safety groups, it leads to bigger problems down the line,” he warns.
The Labor and Fire Inspectorate urges employers to adhere to its guidelines regarding mental well-being in the workplace, emphasizing the need for proactive measures in creating an environment that supports both children and staff alike.
