Rising Star: Kennet Eichhorn Shines Brightly for Hertha Berlin

At just 16 years old, Kennet Eichhorn is already making waves in the world of football, heralded as a prodigious talent for Hertha Berlin. As a regular on the pitch, Eichhorn is being hailed as a player destined for greatness. Let’s delve deeper into the journey of this burgeoning Germany youth international.

    Player Profile:

    • Age: 16 (Born July 27, 2009)
    • Club: Hertha Berlin
    • Position: Defensive Midfielder
    • Country: Germany (Four U17 caps, two goals)

On a nondescript day, during a match between Hertha and Karlsruhe on August 10, history was quietly rewritten. The game, which ended in a goalless draw, might fade from memory for many, but for Eichhorn, it marked a pivotal moment. Just 16 years and 14 days old, he took to the field as Bundesliga 2’s youngest-ever debutant, a prestigious title narrowly eclipsing the record set by former Borussia Dortmund star Youssoufa Moukoko.

What is particularly remarkable about Eichhorn is not merely his debut at such a tender age; it’s how swiftly he has assimilated into the first team. Having joined the club as an Under-9 player in 2017, Eichhorn has shown remarkable growth, signaling his intent by signing his first professional contract earlier this summer.

In a mere month following his debut, he made headlines yet again, becoming the youngest player to start a Bundesliga 2 match against Hannover on Matchday 5. Eichhorn’s performance was a masterclass in maturity; he completed 86% of his passes while only losing possession once and successfully winning 55% of his duels—a feat that earned him a standing ovation as he left the pitch.

Hertha’s coach, Stefan Leitl, had high praise for the young midfielder, stating, “Sixteen years old, playing in front of 50,000 fans against a top side — for me, he was by far the best player on the pitch.” It is no surprise then that Eichhorn has quickly become a mainstay in the starting lineup, playing a pivotal role in Hertha’s rise from the bottom of the league standings to a respectable eighth position.

In a recent pre-match update, Leitl shifted the focus to the returning veteran midfielders, playfully commenting, “The question is, which of them will partner Kennet Eichhorn?” This underscores Eichhorn’s growing influence as a key player for the club.

Not only is Eichhorn making waves at the club level, but he is also leaving his mark on the international scene. He has captained the Germany Under-17 team in all four appearances to date, including a standout performance where he scored twice in a 4-0 victory over Luxembourg in the European Under-17 Championship qualifiers. Had it not been for club commitments, he likely would have led the squad at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.

Eichhorn’s loyalty to Hertha is palpable, as he expressed in July: “I’ve been with Hertha since the U9s and have always been happy here. It’s incredibly important to me that my development never stops. That’s why I see Hertha as the best place for me.”

With his elegance on the ball and uncanny composure, it is little wonder that comparisons are being made between Eichhorn and legendary midfielder Toni Kroos. Those who have followed Eichhorn’s journey are quick to recognize the similarities; Felix Kroos, the 2014 World Cup winner’s brother, noted, “The way he plays is remarkable. He radiates calm and is gaining valuable experience while being allowed to make mistakes.”

Eichhorn’s determination and work ethic have not gone unnoticed. Former youth coach Ante Čović remarked on his impressive growth, stating, “Two or three years ago, there were questions about his physique, but he worked hard to become more resilient. That shows how ambitious he is.”

As Eichhorn continues to forge his path in professional football, the future looks promising for both him and Hertha Berlin. It seems this young talent is just getting started, and we can anticipate great things ahead.
